In January 2019, I traveled alongside fellow CSUCI students, faculty, and alumni to Maui, Hawaii. This research trip worked under the Keiki Kohola Project. This research team focused on understanding humpback whale behavior. Mom and calf pairs were observed in the 'Au'au Channel to understand energy output of specific behaviors. We gathered data for a fluke catalog that will help researchers understand migration patterns of humpback whales. Additionally, our team studied body condition of humpback whales to understand what potential predators or obstacles they may encounter during their migration and in their habitat in the channel.
